High Season
From June to August, Avignon experiences its peak season, defined by long, sun-drenched days and average temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C, often exceeding this in July and August. The Provençal light is at its most intense, giving the city a vibrant glow that welcomes visitors. Upon arrival, you'll find the air warm and dry, setting the scene for an active outdoor experience.
The city's rhythm dramatically shifts during this period, centred around the Festival d'Avignon in July, which transforms the entire city into a stage. Streets are filled with performers, street art, and enthusiastic crowds, creating an infectious, festive atmosphere. Cafes and restaurants spill onto terraces, and evenings are spent outdoors, reflecting a lively, social pace. The Rhône riverbanks also see more activity, with boat trips and leisurely strolls becoming popular.
Low Season
The low season, typically from November to March, brings a quieter, more reflective Avignon. Temperatures drop significantly, averaging between 5°C and 12°C, with crisp, sometimes chilly air and occasional rainfall. The intense summer light softens, giving way to cooler, often overcast skies. The city feels more subdued upon arrival, offering a different, intimate perspective.
Daily life slows down, allowing for a deeper appreciation of Avignon's historical core without the summer crowds. While the grand outdoor festivals are absent, cultural life continues with local theatre productions and museum exhibitions offering warmth and insight. The Christmas market brings some festive cheer in December, but generally, the pace is calm. You can explore the Palais des Papes and other landmarks at your leisure, experiencing a more authentic, local side of the city.
