High Season
Cape Town's high season, from December to February, coincides with its summer. You arrive to a city bathed in warm sunshine, with average temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C. This period is characterised by clear skies and the occasional refreshing southeasterly 'Cape Doctor' wind. The atmosphere is vibrant and energetic, with long daylight hours encouraging outdoor activity well into the evening.
During these months, Cape Town's social calendar flourishes. Beaches, mountain trails, and outdoor dining areas are bustling. Many cultural events, concerts, and festivals take place, reflecting a relaxed, celebratory mood that defines summer in the city. The city pulses with energy, offering an immersive experience of its outdoor lifestyle and lively social scene as you step off your flight.
Low Season
The low season, typically from May to August, brings Cape Town's winter. Temperatures are cooler, averaging between 8°C to 18°C, and the weather is marked by increased rainfall and often dramatic, moody skies. Upon arrival, you encounter a quieter, more reflective city, with fewer crowds and a distinctly different rhythm.
Despite the cooler weather, the low season offers unique charm. Whale watching becomes a major draw along the coast, and the cooler temperatures are ideal for exploring museums, galleries, and cosy indoor venues. The city’s culinary scene also takes centre stage, with many restaurants offering special menus. The low season reveals a more intimate side of Cape Town, focusing on cultural pursuits and the raw beauty of its natural landscape.
