High Season
Chennai's high season, from October to March, offers a more temperate climate. Following the northeast monsoon in October and November, which brings moderate rainfall and cooler temperatures, the city transitions into a pleasant dry spell. From December to March, you can expect warm days with lower humidity, making outdoor exploration more comfortable. This period provides a welcome respite from the intense heat of other months, influencing daily life towards more open-air activities.
During these months, Chennai's social calendar flourishes. Beaches along the Bay of Bengal become popular for morning strolls and evening gatherings. The city buzzes with festivals, most notably Pongal in January, a harvest festival celebrated with vibrant decorations, traditional food, and cultural performances. Upon arrival, you will find a city that feels active and welcoming, with locals and visitors enjoying the more favourable weather and lively atmosphere.
Low Season
The low season, typically from April to September, is characterised by intense heat and high humidity. April, May, and June are the hottest months, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C. The southwest monsoon arrives from June to September, bringing heavy rainfall and increased humidity, which can be quite enervating. This period significantly alters the city's rhythm, pushing daily life indoors to avoid the harsh conditions.
During the low season, Chennai's pace slows down considerably. Outdoor activities become less appealing, and the focus shifts to indoor entertainment and air-conditioned spaces. While there are fewer major festivals compared to the high season, local life continues with a quieter intensity. Arriving in Chennai during this period, you will immediately notice the pervasive heat and humidity, which shape the city's relaxed, almost subdued, daily tempo.
