High Season
Salalah's high season, known locally as Khareef, runs from late June to early September. During this period, a monsoon wind brings a dramatic transformation, bathing the landscape in cool mist and light rain. Temperatures drop significantly, often staying between 20°C and 25°C, providing a refreshing contrast to the arid climate of the wider region. Upon arrival, visitors immediately sense the cooler, humid air and see the lush greenery that blankets the previously dry mountainsides, setting a unique, vibrant atmosphere.
The Khareef season completely redefines Salalah's social and cultural rhythm. The city buzzes with activity, as families flock to enjoy the natural beauty of waterfalls, wadis, and verdant pastures. Outdoor life flourishes with picnics, hiking, and exploring the newly green landscapes. Numerous local festivals and cultural events take place, celebrating the unique weather phenomenon and the region’s heritage, creating a lively and celebratory mood across the city.
Low Season
Outside the Khareef, Salalah experiences its low season, characterised by hot and sunny weather from October to May. Temperatures typically range from 28°C to 35°C, with clear blue skies and low humidity. The landscape reverts to its golden, dry appearance, and the cool mist gives way to abundant sunshine, creating a different kind of calm and openness across the region. Arriving during this time, you will encounter vast, sun-drenched beaches and a serene urban environment.
Life in Salalah during the low season shifts to a more relaxed pace. While the vibrant Khareef events subside, the focus turns to coastal activities and exploring historical sites under clear skies. The beaches become ideal for swimming and sunbathing, and the frankincense trails and ancient ruins are more accessible for exploration without the monsoon mists. This period offers a tranquil escape, with an emphasis on the region's historical depth and pristine shoreline, defining a quieter, sun-soaked identity for the city.
