High Season
Vientiane's high season, typically from November to February, is characterised by dry, pleasant weather and cooler temperatures, averaging around 25-30°C. Upon arrival, you will notice the clear skies and a comfortable atmosphere that encourages outdoor activities. The dry conditions transform the city, making riverside strolls along the Mekong more appealing and the numerous temples, such as Wat Si Saket, particularly inviting for exploration.
During these months, Vientiane buzzes with a calm yet noticeable energy. Local markets are vibrant, and outdoor cafés and restaurants are popular. This period often coincides with significant cultural events, including various temple festivals and the Lao National Day celebrations in December, adding to the city’s unique charm. The cooler climate makes it ideal for bicycle tours and exploring the city’s French colonial architecture on foot.
Low Season
The low season, generally from May to October, brings the monsoon rains and higher temperatures, often exceeding 30°C with increased humidity. Upon landing, you might experience the fresh scent of rain and witness the city's greener, more lush landscape. While heavy downpours are common, they usually occur in short bursts, leaving clear intervals, particularly in the mornings.
This period sees a shift in Vientiane's rhythm, becoming more tranquil and less crowded. Daily life adapts to the rain, with locals seeking shelter in shaded areas and indoor venues. Although some outdoor activities are less frequent, the rainy season enhances the Mekong's flow and brings a different kind of beauty to the landscape. It is also a time for unique local traditions, with some Buddhist holidays taking place, offering a more intimate experience of Vientiane's cultural fabric.
